7 Tips for Relocating With Pets

Updated: 3 days ago
A PCS is stressful for pets too. They notice the boxes, the strangers and the changes in routine. As a military spouse for more than 30 years and an Arlington Associate Broker with 560+ transactions, I've moved with pets and helped many families find pet-friendly homes. Here are seven tips.
This article is general information, not tax, legal or financial advice.
1. Keep their routine at home
Keep food bowls and beds in the same place for as long as you can. Leave favorite toys, harnesses and leashes unpacked.
2. See the vet early
Get vaccines, boosters and medication refills done before the move, and get copies of their records. Base housing, rentals and overseas moves may require up-to-date records, and some countries need months of preparation. Check the requirements as soon as you have orders.
3. Plan transportation
Decide how each pet will travel, whether by car or plane, and check that crates are the right size. Pack food, bowls, waste supplies and any special equipment for birds, reptiles or fish.
4. Know the allowance
The military's pet transportation allowance covers one cat or dog per set of PCS orders. It pays up to $550 for a move within the continental U.S. and up to $2,000 for an overseas move. Keep your receipts, since actual costs are often higher. My PCS emergency fund guide can help you plan.
5. Book pet-friendly lodging early
Pet-friendly rooms fill up, especially in summer and over the holidays. Ask about limits on the number or size of pets. A ground-floor room near green space makes walks easier.
6. Settle in safely
Check fences before letting pets out alone. Indoors, set up a quiet room with their things before you open the front door to movers.
7. Find a new vet and give extra attention
Find a vet and the nearest emergency animal hospital right away. Then give your pets extra walks and attention while they adjust.
In Northern Virginia
Many Northern Virginia rentals and condos limit pets by number, size or breed, so ask early. I'm glad to help you find homes and neighborhoods with yards and dog parks nearby. My neighborhood guide can help.
