Military Saves: Building Your PCS Emergency Fund

A PCS is a financial event as much as a logistical one. Even with government allowances, families often pay for things that aren't reimbursed. As a military spouse for more than 30 years and an Arlington Associate Broker with 560+ transactions, I've seen how much calmer a move is when there's money set aside. Many families aim for a few thousand dollars before orders arrive.

This article is general information, not tax, legal or financial advice.

Costs that catch families off guard

  • Pets: The pet transportation allowance pays up to $550 for a move within the continental U.S. and up to $2,000 for an overseas move. Kennels, health certificates and pet-friendly lodging can cost more.

  • Restocking the pantry: You usually can't move open food, so the first big grocery trip adds up.

  • Utility deposits at your new home.

  • House-hunting trips before you move, unless you have permissive TDY. Travel costs are generally yours.

  • Extra lodging if your household goods or closing are delayed.

What's reimbursed and what isn't

Usually reimbursed, under the Joint Travel Regulations:

  • Mileage (MALT) for driving your vehicles.

  • Per diem for travel days.

  • Temporary lodging: In the continental U.S., Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) covers 7 or 21 days in total, depending on your new duty station, up to $290 a day. Overseas moves use a different allowance.

  • Dislocation allowance (DLA) to help with miscellaneous moving costs.

Usually not reimbursed:

  • Rental car extensions if your vehicle shipment is late.

  • Appliance repairs after the move.

  • Extra child care during packing.

Ways to soften the hit

1. Ask about advance DLA, and use it only for moving costs.

2. Look back at your last move. Your bank statements show where the money went, which helps you set a goal.

3. Track your mileage and keep receipts. Check the current rates with the Defense Travel Management Office before you file.

4. Automate savings a few months before your expected move.
