The moving truck has left, and you're standing in your new living room surrounded by boxes. Trying to unpack everything on the first afternoon leads to exhaustion. As a military spouse for more than 30 years and an Arlington Associate Broker with 560+ transactions, I've learned that the secret to a calm first day is a Day 1 kit: the essentials you carry yourself, so you're not digging through boxes.

This article is general information, not tax, legal or financial advice.

Bedding

Pack sheets, blankets and pillows for everyone in a duffel bag that rides in your car. If your household goods are late, air mattresses help. Set up beds before dinner, not at midnight.

Bathroom

  • A shower curtain and rings, towels and toiletries. Most homes don't come with a shower curtain.

  • Toilet paper, hand soap and a small trash can.

  • A first-aid kit for the cuts and scrapes that come with box cutters and furniture.

Kitchen

Pack paper plates, utensils, paper towels, trash bags, a coffee maker and snacks. A coffee and snack station gives everyone a break spot.

Tools and paperwork

Bring a basic tool kit, a box cutter, chargers and the bag of screws and remotes for your furniture. Keep your orders, closing documents and inventory sheets with you.

Your first 24 hours

1. Clean first. Wipe counters, bathrooms and the refrigerator before you unpack.

2. Inspect as you unload. Note damage on the delivery paperwork, and take photos. My moving claims guide explains the deadlines.

3. Set up beds.

4. Find the tools and hardware for furniture assembly.

In Northern Virginia

If you've bought a home here, change the locks, test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and find the water shut-off in your first week. My first home improvement projects and home maintenance tips can help.
